Question:

My son hasn't started walking?

He 14 months old and he was 2 months premature.

We have been walking with him, allowing him to make steps like in between us and on his own. What are other ways we could help him start to gain confidence in order for him to walk?

  1. When my younger sister wouldn't walk, we took the sunglasses that she'd always pull off my mom's face, showed them to her, and put them on the other side of the room.  She'd crawl over to them so we'd take them away and keep putting them on the other side of the room.  Eventually she began to walk.

We made sure that she had a table near her to put her hand on for balance.  Try putting the object he likes at the opposite end of the table from him and stand him up holding the table, he'll try to walk over towards it.  Then do the same thing in the middle of the floor after he attempts a few steps with the table.

  2. chill...no worries..

every child takes his/her time to start walking...never a push a child , plus u say he was born premature!!!

    so relax n stop worrying!!

my daughter took her 1st steps when she was 15 mnths old!!

  3. Buy a push toy! Like a walker thing that plays music as It moves! Buy fisherprice!

Thats how I got my god son to walk!

  4. He will be fine, Dr's won't worry until 18 months because some just don't walk until then.  Sounds like he is on his way to learning.

  5. You need to give him something to work toward. His favorite toy, a snack. Put it on the opposite end with a person he likes. Keep trying.

He may just be behind developmentally. Especially if he was premature he may not have developed all the muscles yet.  Dont be alarmed and give it time.

  6. you shouldnt he will walk when he is ready -

forcing to walk early has been shown to cause developmental delays

  7. you could buy him a toy. There are toys out there that are made to help toddlers take their first steps.

  8. Dont worry, i had a friend whos baby was 2 month preemiee too and her daughter didnt start walking till she was almost 2. I have a daughter with special needs and she didnt start walking till almost 2 also. I have a one year old who wants nothing to do with walking yet either, i cant even get her to stand up and balance, lol. They will all do it when the time is right, dont push it to hard or he might start to hate trying to do it.

  9. he will be ok! my little girl is 14 months too and ther is no sign of her walking at all. only in the past 2 weeks she has got the confidence to crawl. just keep what your doing. maybe get one of the push along toys.

  10. Although your son is 14 months of age, his 2-month prematurity pushes him back to functioning at 12-month level (1 year old)-- think as if he was born two months after his real birth date. Those delays are normal for a premature child.

If he's able to stand, follow the examples listed by many of the members here. They are great ideas!!

If you are truly concerned about your child's gross-motor skills, you can have your child evaluated by a physical therapist who can determine whether or not your son's delays are enough for services.

  11. He's Fine My First Daughter was Not Early Yet She Did Not Start Walking On Her Own Either Tell She was Around 14 months old and that was the first time she actually kind of started walking Withing a week or 2 she was walking like a pro with no problem. Now At 2 She runs and everything with all the Other kids. All Babies walk At different Ages And with your baby Being Premature Then A lot of times they are Even a little delayed I would not worry about it at all.All you can really do is hold hands with him and try to get him to walk that way and maybe let go of him but stand by him and see if he does it on his own and be there to catch him If he starts to fall.
