  1. Check out this school: www.caliva.org

It is free and they can help you with your son every step of the way.

    Good luck.

  2. Hi Marlene!

It sounds like you need to start by researching. First thing, check out to see what is required by law in your state at www.hslda.org.  This site will tell you what is required by you state.  Next, do a search for homeschool associations in your state/area.  This will help a lot too.  I have been reading a lot of books.  I bought, "Homeschool your child for free", by LauraMaery Gold and Joan M. Zielinski, which gives excellent internet resources to free stuff.  I also have hooked up with a couple of church members who homeschool to ask questions.  In addition, I have checked out library books, done internet research, etc.  Another book I like and am currently reading is, "Homeschooling Take a deep breath- you can do this" by Terrie Lynn Bittner.  It is an easy read and full of information.  Let's face it, there is a lot of information to be found and it can be overwhelming.  Are you and your son ready to make the committment to homeschooling or is your son just having a tough year?  Once school is out, try to sit down and talk with him more about it.  I know in S.C., homeschoolers have to let their homeschool association know by August 1st  and the association will notify the school.  Hope this is of some help.  Good luck and God bless!

  3. ask around

  4. There are many options available but it mostly depends on your state rules. Check with the superintendent of schools or the department of education for your county or state to find out the rules. You can also go to www.hsld.org and click on your state to find out the rules. Once you know what's allowed and what's not you can choose a curriculum. For those starting out especially in the upper grades it's is sometimes best to use a "school-at-home" approach so that everything is mapped out for you and at his age it can be more student led (not lots of planning on your part!)  Check out www.k12.com they are an accredited curriculum and in most states they even partner with the local schools as a Virtual Charter School.  You son would still be considered a "public school" student but would do all his work from home via the k12 Online Learning School and the books they send. If you state participates in that program then it is all FREE! If not you can still order the supplies as an independent homeschooler.  There is also Calvert (another online school).  There are also some great resources for you to research at the library or from a bookstore (just search homeschooling)! Find some yahoo support groups and ask lots of questions!
