  1. My wife and I home school our children, you need not buy expensive curriculum guides to make it work.  We make our own based on the state standards that are free to access.  I would recommend that you contact a local home schooling group for advice.  Check out http://www.hslda.org for great info on home schooling.

I believe that Georgia is one of the more strict states when it comes to home schooling.  Since I do not live there, I am not familiar with all the options and resources there, but I know in my state the school is required to provide text books at no cost.

  2. This may not be the program for you, but I am homeschooling myself. What I do, is pick a subject every day and then go to the library, get every single book I can find on that subject, read them, and Voila! Instant expert. Along with this, I do a simple science project, practice a little math, write a short journal entry on what I learned, read my scriptures, reading a chapter or two out of a novel, and practice an instrument everyday.

This is only for those wishing to take the G.E.D., as you cannot get a diploma this way unless you have very careful documentation of what you do.

    Good luck!

  3. I know how you feel for some of the same reasons I home school my children ...here is some info that might help you find out of there are free online charter schools in your area or what other options are out there for you

  4. If he's in 8th grade and not 9th, you could try the Georgia Virtual Academy (K12):

I don't know if they plan to expand to high school, but you could contact them and ask.  They may or may not be accepting applications this late in the school year (but maybe at the start of 2nd semester).

GAVA is a public school, so all the materials are free (perhaps the normal PS fee).  The curriculum is outstanding!

  5. it's going to cost something but you can keep it minimal.

Library books.  Thrift stores.  Libraries sell old books cheap.  There is barnes and noble.

All you need are the staples.  A geometry book you buy, earth science texts you check out from the library.

There are on line resources free of charge like How Stuff Works

I even found a complete collegel level organic chemistry course from a professor who writes text books.

  6. have u tried continuation schooling? same thing as homeschooling but not that much time in school and can finish school faster if he does a great amount of work

  7. I'm practaly in the same boat. We use ACE it cost about 40 a month to get the work books and we buy them at the beginning of the month. The site is www.schooloftomorrow.com I know its hard but its worth it. You can also get stuff from the library for free you have to look but its there. Good Luck

  8. Consider unschooling.  There are plenty of things that are free/low cost to aid following your sons passions.

Libraries are full of free curricula.

Best of luck to you :D

  9. Go to www.k12.com

Georgia isn't that strict when it comes to homeschoolers.( Homeschooled there for 3 years) This will provide you with the info you need. Also go to www.hslda.org for the laws in Ga.

  10. I just went to our local school districts website, and looked at their curriculum guides. Then I figured out ways to meet those guidelines. They put it in word for word, and I just went to the public library and homeschool groups to ask for certain books. i don't think I spent over $15 the first year to set up for five kids.

Here's the website, it's pretty close to the federal guidelines and VERY detailed. There are even book lists for literature.
