  1. have him evaluated by early intervention. He does need speech therapy. It may take as little as 6-9 month for him to catch up, and all the services are free. Your husband may have had an undiagnosed disorder such as apraxia that he eventually overcame. The change in my son once he started speech therapy was  amazing...his personality blossomed and he became more vibrant. the tantrums he used to have like 12 times a day all but disappeared.

Does your son drool? does he stuff his mouth full of food? Does he prefer spicy or strongly flavored foods? If he gets food on his upper lip can he stick his tongue out to l**k it off? can he make a fishy face? puff his cheeks full of air? blow raspberries? I have an article that I can send you as an e-mail attachment if you are interested. It is about developmental apraxia which is what my son has.

  2. Ana, don't worry, many children start to speak on the age of 4! But that your son will start to do it faster, first of all you should talk all the time with your son. Discuss with him everything, like with adult! Tell him all news and sing songs, try to explain him a lot of new things, and talk, talk, and talk.... if child will listen your voise, your words very often he'll start to reply you too!

  3. If you're concerned, take him to a speech therapist.

Does he attempt to make noises that mimic the object he's trying to obtain or discuss?

Does he make any sound at all or is he completely silent?

I know a 2 1/2 year old girl (same age, to the day as my daughter) who barely speaks.  She has a few words she uses, but only people who know her well know what she's saying.  Her parents aren't concerned though because she can communicate what she needs, and she has two older sisters who talk non-stop so it's sort of hard for her to get a word in edge-wise.

I think speaking is partly genetic, partly personality, and partly parental involvement.

If you're doing everything on your end (reading books to him, helping him sound out things, encouraging him to repeat the words and sounds you use, singing songs, learning the alphabet), and he still isn't speaking, then take him to a speech therapist to get him analyzed.

it could come down to something as simple as hearing, stubborn-ness, or he needs a different form of encouragement.

    Good luck!

  4. Go to see doctor. My mon tole me I began to speak when I was one year old. Can your son call mom or dad?

  5. I think it's normal unless he can't say mom or dad, in most cases u have to get them to say the word, ex. i taught my daughter how to say ball by pointing at it and telling her to say it, they understand...but if u feel this is not the case, then i suggest u consult with ur doctor

  6. I have several friends whose two year olds dont speak. one of them insists on getting her daughter to speak so she gets help from professionals. I think that they will start speaking eventually.
