  1. Well the boys at his school will start joining local football clubs and teams,  so let him follow suit with his mates.   All the reputable local clubs will be registered with the county football association( Durham)  who can supply you with a list of clubs in your area.  and the names and phone Nos of the club secretaries should you want them. r... Contact a local cub... Take your lad along.  See if you like the set up.   If so sign him up.   He will attend weekly training sessions and play matches ,,,

  2. Get in touch with the FA (www.theFA.com) - they will have a list of all approved coaching courses in your area. (Our son aged 4.5 and daughter 3 go to an FA course on a Saturday morning and they love it!)

  3. Try your local newspaper. They are always advertising for young players. My local rag has try outs for young folk like your wee boy. Good luck..

  4. Great idea. Running around and fresh air. There must be loads of boys clubs in the area.  try ringing the local radio stations to see if anyone can help.  If not, some of the smaller amateur sides might have boys teams.

PS  Don't necessarily harbour hopes of your son turning out to be the next Bobby Charlton, or Alan Shearer, as the chances are slim.  But good luck anyway.

  5. You might like to start here.

A word of warning! Some of these junior teams can be extremely competitive (amongst parents) as to place the children under unwarranted pressure to succeed. I took my son away from such a team and found another, wider interest group, in which he thrived and went on to win many trophies, playing football at County level.

Take in a few matches before deciding which team to join.
