I totally agree with Jim.

The nearest mountain to you will difinitely have a lesson appropriate for your son and there's usually a package that includes lesson, rentals and a lift ticket.

Slap a helmet on him and give him a push.  Snowboarding is a great sport and you might even want to try it with him!  It could be a fun bonding experience.

I started at about 8 years old. I went to ski school and took a private lesson every so often. To me, taking a private lesson is vital. While ski school is cheaper and does help, a private lesson can let and instructor pick out specific problems he has.

Go to the nearest ski school, ask them if they give lessons.  Most snow sports areas now offer both ski and snowboard lessons. A very reasonable package at some areas is three lessons, equipment and lift pass for about $100.    Check with the area ski school.
