yesterday i cleaned him up after school, there was p**p on his bottom and a bad rash, this morning he woke up with the same thing, but said he didn't go to the bathroom between the time i cleaned him and him going to bed. he also has to wear a pull up to bed every night because he will not wake up to pee; is it just my child or do other kids have these problems too

  1. First off, I'd suggest you invest in some flushable wipes. It's a lot easier to get clean with something wet than something dry back there :-)

    Here's something about incontinence http://www.education.com/reference/artic...

This problem is twice as common in boys as girls and it says it happens in about 5% of boys at age 10

    Good luck :-)

  2. My son is 8 and still wears a pull up to bed, he wakes up wet every morning. This is normal for many kids.  My son also has a hard time getting himself real clean when he goes p**p. I buy the cottonelle wet wipes, they are flushable and he can get himself clean when he used a couple of those in addition to regular toilet paper. I haven't had any issues since I started buying those. I leave them on the back of the toilet.

For the night time thing, don't listen to people who tell you if he didn't have a pull up he would be dry. People told us that and we tried to go without it and for three nights in a row my son just soaked the bed and because he is such a heavy sleeper he didn't wake up until morning. Kids can't help it. There is a chemical the body produces at night that slows down the production of urine and some kids don't produce enough of this chemical which is why they still wet at night like they would during the day. This is something they outgrow and not something they can help whether they have a pull up or not.

There is a medication you can talk to your doctor about it's called Oxybutinin and it slows the production of urine for up to 6 hours.

  3. its not "just" your child, but by this age he should have control of his bowels and bladder, my daughter hasnt went in her bed since she was 3.  you need to show him how to clean himself the right way and maybe keep him some of those flushable wet wipes in the bathroom to make it easier.  and i think instead of a pullup, which gives security like a diaper wold, i would get one of the zip up wet proof covers for his mattress, then when he pees he will have to put on  a new sheet  and change clothes but his  bed will be dry, they just wipe clean, and dont rattle like the old plastic covers did.  maybe ask his dr to be sure there is nothg major wrong and go from there.  good luck   i know it can  get  on your last nerve real quick  :)

  4. you may want to look into the possiblity that your son has encopresis.  (I will probably get thumbs down for this) Anyway, it is more commmon in boys and in this case, a small amount of stool can leak around a large mass of stool causing him to leak. The fact that the stool sits on the skin unbeknownst to your son can cause the rash. The stool is more likely to leak when he is relaxed (as in sleeping)  It is possible that there is also a large amount of stool pressing on the bladder which can cause him to not empty his bladder completely causing the bed wetting. You can email me if you need more info.

  5. maybe hes not wiping himslef good enough with toilet paper. you can always get the Kando flushable wipes for kids. It may help clean him better. good luck!

  6. This sounds like two separate problems.

Is it possible that since the pullup protects him from feeling wet, then he has no motivation to wake up to pee?

    Some ideas:

No water before bedtime.  This alone might do it.

Wake him up during the night and make him get up to pee even if he doesn't have to go.  It will form a habit for him.

Possibly get a waterproof pad for the bed and don't have him wear a pullup.   (What arial said.)

The other problem is worrisome.  If he's having diarrhea every day it could be something serious.  Whoever said encopresis is probably on the right track, but it could be something worse.

  7. Sometimes that ca happen with kids, but first I suggest you take him to the doctor's and see what he/she says is going on and what you can do. If that doesn't help maybe making him wear a diaper will help, and when you clean him up use some kind of lotion to maybe help. Hope this info helps.

  8. Other kids have the problem too....

And other kids' parents take them to see the doctor.

Its time you took your son to see the doctor too.
