My son is about 8-9 lbs. How much oz should he be eating?

He is currently eating 3 oz every 3 hrs. It seems like he is still hungry, but don't want to over feed him. He was a small baby at 4lbs 2oz, but gained 3 lbs in about 3 weeks.

Dr told me that he may be catching up on his growth.

I fed him 3 oz, then 1 an hour after and he seemed content. But again, in 3 hrs he is hungry again.

Soooo do you think at this time, 4 ozs for a 8-9lb baby is okay?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

  1. I think if baby is hungry you feed him.  He won't keel over if you do overfeed him...he'll barf.  =)  That's the worst really, on the other hand....he's hungry, so give him a little more food...or feed him a little more slowly to maybe help the feeding last longer and he may be satisfied longer, but for sure esp w/ a preemie or light weight who needs to gain some of that weight, feed him more if he wants it... just do it in small amounts like you are already thinking...your looking at just adding 1 oz..not 5..good, go w/ small amounts and see how he does.  =)

  2. Sounds fine to me but if he is still hungry after 3oz then give him 4. My daughter does not drink a lot and I worry about her so I wish mine was mor like yours.

The general rule is 2 - 2 1/2 times his body weight which would be 16 - 23oz in 24 hours.

  3. Babies need to eat every few hours.  It takes almost a year for babies to sleep a 6 hour stretch.

  4. My 8 week old boy weighs 11lbs now and he drinks 3.5 oz of breastmilk and is supplemented at night with two 4 oz bottles through the night.  When he hits a growth spurt, he drinks a lot more.  Don't worry, just let the baby drink what they'd like.  If it's too much they'll burp it up.  If your really worried, bump up the next feeding half an ounce at a time.

  5. Well my daughters 7 1/2 months and shes on solids now...She still drinks 8oz and is not over fed shes not a chubby baby either...Maybe try putting and extra oz in his next feed if hes still unstatisfied then put another oz in the next feed...He will only drink as much as he needs.....

    Good Luck...
