  1. Most UK based banks will charge something for converting currency on a credit card, not to mention the interest as well.

    You might want to consider a pre-paid credit card where transaction costs vary from nil to a quite high percentage.

    This is a standard MasterCard, Visa or Maestro that is effectively topped up.

    Lastminute.com do one which has reasonable charges.

    The advantages are that they can be topped up generally anywhere from the internet and there is no credit record.
