My son is going to a 6 month tech school and in filling out the fafsa....

it seems that i am responsible for more than 3/4's of this and the strange thing is i do NOT have a high income. so, we try everywhere to get some kind of loan and because of my credit...it is impossible. is there anything out there for people in our position? or does he just not go? ( he did get a $1600 pell grant)

By completing the FAFSA he will be able to be considered for the Stafford student loan.  It's low-interest, no credit check, no cosigner, and doesn't have to be repaid until six months after he graduates (or leaves school).  If the aid office didn't indicate he is eligible have him contact the office.  Also, check out scholarship information at http://www.finaid.org/scholarships/.

First of all, YOU are not responsible for paying his tuition, he is.  If you want to, you can.  but you are not obligated to.  Also, the EFC number is not how much he will have to pay for his school.  If his tuition is more than 1,600 than the fafsa is the beginning process for a Stafford loan as well.  Don't do any private loans as they have substandard fees and high interest rates.  If the school does not do federal loans, find a better school.
