  1. Sadly there isn't really a cheap way - flying is the quickest and Qantas has the monopoly so they can set whatever price they like.  Also as they have to run a regular service, they fly a full load or just one person, so you can't get a cheaper last minute ticket.  Bus tours may be cheaper, but take a very long time and additional costs like meals would probably even things out.  Accommodation at Alice Springs is also quite pricey - these people live off tourism so they want to bleed everything they can out of you.  Sorry I have no better answer.

    Have a look at:

    http://www.atn.com.au/nt/south/uluru.htm

    http://www.discoveraustralia.com.au/nort...

But I warn you prices aren't cheap :(

edit: Contrary to what others have written, budget airlines like Jetstar, VirginBlue and Tiger DO NOT have services to Alice Springs and apparently aren't planning to add this service within the next 6 months.  I wasted quite some time on the phone chasing similar advice from someone when doing my own research.

  2. fly jetstar ,hire a wicked van drive to uluru. on the way go to the opal mines kings canyon heaps more to do as you go. the wicked van takes care of accommodation and tours but petrol in these areas isn't cheap.it gives much more flexibility

  3. There is the train option- The Ghan but long way there(goes to Alice Springs or may drop off before to those with connections to the Rock), but check for backpacker  train ticket specials which are available to overseas travellers.

Also check YHA Travel in Rawson St Sydney and a string of backpacker hostels just around the corner in George St
