  1. As a teacher, I am NOT in favor of medicating to control behaviors except as a very last resort, and since your son is only 5, I find it very hard to believe that all other possible solutions have been tried.  Children who have behavior issues need to be carefully taught how to manage their behaviors, not taught to medicate their behaviors, so I'm with you on this one.  You need to explain your thoughts to the school and ask for alternatives.  If they are not supportive, I would be seeking a new school if possible.  Remember, you are your child's strongest advocate!

  2. Is your child currently on an IEP?  At this age, I don't agree with medicating a child because of behaviors.  There is a much better way to go about changing behaviors and that is by giving the child choices and using constructive discipline.  I work as an Early Childhood Special Education teacher and have several children in my class that have behavior problems.  We have developed a Behavior Intervention Plan to use with their IEP.  It gives us guidelines on how we handle the behaviors and what we do to modify them.

At this age it is always your choice to remove your child from any elective program, but once they are in school (K-12), these issues may come up again and have to be addressed.

If your child currently has an IEP and you feel they have met their goals/objectives as stated in the IEP and no longer need to recieve services...ask for your child to be re-evaluated to see if they test out.

    Good Luck

  3. Alot of teacher do recomend this My son has a behavrioal issue too he has autism, I spoke to his teacher BEFORE school started to explain how he is and the first thing she asked me was Is he on medication for it. That told me how it was going to be. They cannot make u put him on it. but they can be less flexiable on how to handle him. In KY there was a child that had charges pressed against him for hitting his teacher (Kindergarden) I was so glad that my son didnt go there he would be sentenced to life by now. Dont take him out of ese. He may be better now but it is a constant battle If you take him out he will prob fall behind.
