He is doing his research for financial aid, but since the school he is looking at is 6 hours from home, he needs a place to live, and would rather focus on the school instead of work and school. Is there a delayed repay style loan he can get that would give him enough money for school and for living expenses?

usually, cosmetology schools are eligible for federal loans. So, you will be able to have the same experience with federal loans as any four year student.  Depending on what loans he is eligible for, he has 6 month after graduation to pay back the loans.
