  1. Hooked on phonics I am telling you this program works how old is he you just have to sit down with him and keep trying take breaks make out a reward system if necessary

  2. You don't say how old he is, but the best way I found to teach my now 15 yr. old son to read when he was about 4 was to turn on the closed captioning on the tv.  Since he was watching anyway, I used it as a learning tool and not a babysitter.  He will soon recognize the familiar names and before you know it, reading will not be such a chore for him.  You will be amazed how quickly he will pick things up.  Good luck, and just be patient.

  3. Tell him"Of course you can't read YET,that's why it is called LEARNING hon,you are going to keep at it until you CAN read!I KNOW you will be able to,it may take a little longer but you WILL do it!"

I was young once and did NOT want to learn to read, do math or anything else.I wanted to PLAY!

You need to explain WHY an education is important.Tell him to do a chore, make sure it is something he does NOT Like, pay him very very little. He WILL get upset. Then explain to him when he gets older,if he cannot read, write,do math etc, he will work MUCH harder ALL week AND weekends for not much more than you just gave him.

Also take him to the library and let him pick out some books he might like.I bet he would like one about dinosaurs, or a dr. suess book.

  4. Practice every day.

    Don't practice too long.

If you lose your temper he won't want to try anymore.

Cool your frickin jets or go back to therapy.

  5. slap him silly on the head...it works pretty good on my 3 kids..lol

  6. The thing with children, is that they all don't learn the same way.  Maybe take reading and make a game out of it, does he like sports, make a game involving his favorite sport and reading, let him be the sports newscaster for the game, they have to read.  Use your imagination, books, lesson plans, those things are the things, well as far as I am seeing, of the past, maybe invest in one of those computer reading programs, you are his parent and you know his strengths and weaknesses, you guys can get through this, and this too shall pass, watch.   God Bless.
