My son just entered a therapeutic boarding school. Does anyone have any experience with these?

I've got to think this is going to be so hard on him, if he truly does have SPD. But other reasons made it seem like our last resort. Thanks.

  1. I got to a school that has a boarding program and sometimes my I stay there for respite or if my family goes away for a while. It is fine. They are nice to people there and it works.

The school has everyone from BD and ED to total disabilitiy. I have autism spectrum disorder so that is why I go.

I think some might be bad but some are good.

Anyone can make an unannounced visit to the school if their name is on the list my parents give them. They have to check in at the office but they can see me and stuff.

    Its nice.

  2. Some of these schools are downright abusive. If you cannot make an unannounced visit any time of the day or night; if communication is censored or monitored in any way; if the counselors do not have bachelor's degrees and the administrators do not have master's or better; if they ask for legal custody... I survived a totalitarian "school" that billed itself as "the only good way for a young person to get an education". Have the PTSD and mental hospital visits to prove it. Better now, but I was lucky... many of the graduates of the bad programs will go into drugs or depression to try to cope afterwards. I am warning parents to be very, very careful. Some of these schools are literally torturing children. If you cannot visit at a moment's notice, there is probably something bad going on.

  3. Yes, it's also hard on the parents.  Use this time to sit down with a counselor or psychologist for personal issues regarding this decision and how to respond to him best when he returns.

Trust yourself.  They wouldn't have accepted him without just cause.

  4. From my experience,Boarding school is no place

for young kids.I was in one for LD kids or thats

what we were told,I found out most the kids there

were sent by juvinile services for felonies. I was

told how worthless I was. This was 30 years ago.

This damaged my self esteem. Please no boarding school.
