My son is 5, He is on 5mg of adderall in the am, he seems worse to me. Do I hang in there because it takes awhile for it to level out for him? I would like any advice because now I am worrying all the time.

  1. Check his diet. Is it full of processed and junk food and sugar? He needs fresh fruit, veggies, lean protein, whole grains and water/100% juice. That should at least help a little.

  2. I agree with the diet, of course, but I have to say, 5 mg is close to nothing. My son is 6. He had to be put on adderall as well. The doctor started him at 5 years old with 5 mg. it didnt work. The doctor said this was mainly to make sure he wouldnt have an adverse reaction to the meds. He is now on 15 mg and it works wonders. But, like the other parent said, let them take a break from it on the weekends.

  3. My son was 5 when they diagnosed him with ADD.  You should give it atleast 2 weeks and if no change the level may need to be re-evaluated.  They changed my sons dosage 3 times before he was himself and able to function.  One suggestion is to try controlling it through a diet, specialized by a doctor of course.  One other thing that helps my son is an energy drink, dont ask why cause I dont know but it helps him during the weekends at which time I dont give him a pill.  Good luck, this was very hard for me to get in the program with.
