Question:

My son just went on to 1st grade?

He had progressed to far to re-do kindegarden, but may be behind for 1st grade. Is any one aware of websites that offer training? Or anything I can do to help. He has trouble reading, writing. He also seems to get frustrated & shuts himself down. He's been tested, and is in higher percentile (he is a bright kid, just not showing in school work). Advice is appreciated.

  1. I just picked up the grade one book it was available at costco..remember that the attention time will be about 15 minutes for a child this age

the best thing is that you pick a time every day to help him read and write. is he having issues writing his alphabet or is he having issues writing words??? my daughter who was ranked 2nd in her grade level (now going to 1st grade in Aug. ) cannot write words correctly most of the time.  Honestly if there is a kid in your family that your son likes- or is close to try and have him help with getting him to start reading. that is how my daughter started. also you need to take him to the store to get books and let him pick them out. tell him that he needs to pick out books to read to you.. he will need help but just kep encouraging him and do not get aggiated.

you can also get a book where the coloring books are that walmart that  say first grade phonics..... it is an activity book that will help.

  3. consider other options for his education like private or charter school.  talk with the school pyschologist, teacher, and pediatrician.  consider talking with your child, too.  pay more attention thru out the school year to your child instead of at the end.

  4. Work with him yourself. If you still have lesson plans/homework from his kindergarten class, that will at least give you a direction, and I'm sure there are a ton of websites.

Flashcards work really well, at least that's what worked for my niece, who is going into 1st grade in the fall, too.

Also, you can put flashcards of things around your house (lamp, door, window, rug, bathroom, etc) and also of colors to help him learn as well. This worked really well with my niece.

  5. It seems to me that I began reading programs in first grade.  I know that these days they are getting kindergarteners to do more.

They sell workbooks in stores, such as KMart, Target, etc, as well as flash cards and things like that.  Very good books, too.

Has it dawned on you that he might be shutting down because you're pushing him too hard?  So, buy him a work book on beginning reading, and maybe one on counting. Set aside a 10 - 15 minute block of time to do one or two pages. Make it like a mother/son togetherness, play time. Do not yell, nor let your frustration sound in your voice.

  6. Is he entering 1st grade now, for the first time?

My daughter graduated kindergarten this summer, and will be in first grade in the fall. Before she entered school, I came across this website for kids, and it really helped advance her in all that she learned in kindergarten.

    http://www.starfall.com/

After entering kindergarten, she told me that her teacher used this website to help teach the students.

I highly recommend this website. My 3 years old can now do many of the activities on there. The bright colors are great at keeping them attracted to the games and activities..if your son cringes at the word "learn" just introduce it as a game. He'll learn without even noticing.

Let him play for maybe a few hours a day, spread out (so he's not there all day lol) Sit down with him for the first few times he plays there, so you can help him.

I hope this is helpful to you! It's better than paying someone or a company to teach him. Kids are hard to keep still when learning from a book, so, this might make learning fun and easier!

  7. He can't pass 1st Grade?  FAIL.

  8. just practice reading w/ him at night and maybe get some workbooks. you could also get him enrolled in a learning center like sylvan or something. hope that helps!
