My son recieves SSI but was denied Medicaid.?

My understanding was that he would automatically get Medicaid when accepted for SSI. Did I do something wrong, or is he getting screwed?

  1. It may depend on his age. You didn't mention it, but you can still in some cases receive SSI after the age of 19, but if he hasn't worked enough he may keep getting denied for Medicaid. Just keep reapplying and appeal (with a lawyer, if you can). Trust me, there are people at the Medicaid office who get paid just to tell people no.

  2. In some states, when SSI is approved, medicaid is also approved. In other states, a separate medicaid application is required. See the link below to see which applies in your state:

    http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa....

If you were just told that he would not qualify for medicaid in your state, that is not a reliable response. Submit an actual application (some states enable you to do the app on-line or print the app and mail it in). Google your state and medicaid for the link. If he is still denied, you will recieve a written reason and IF anything can be done to rectify the reason for denial, you will know.

EDIT:email me with your state and I will get you more info and links.

  3. well concidering his age i think you are getting screwed!! are you white? cuz that has a lot to do with it too i know it is mean but yeah that is life and it also has a lot on how much you make but if he is getting SSI he should be getting medicaid also i know when i went to get on food stamps before i had all these kids they told me if i was black or mexican id have a better chance but cuz im white there was nothin they could do and my hubby made like 100 too much a year but i have 3 girls and like no money and i dont understand taht c**p too they go by how much you make not how much you bring home if i was bringing what i made home i wouldnt need their d**n help but if i were u id fight and dont give up till you have some answers it is like we pay our taxes we are intitled to some help when we need it it is like for a family of 5 we only get 180 a month and my hubby makes like 500 a week but brings home less than 450 but i guess it is better than nothin i f***ing hate bush

  4. Your understanding is wrong.  Medicaid, with very few exceptions, is for low income people - they count the whole family.

You're likely confusing Medicaid with Medicare.

If your son is on SSDI, he's eligible for Medicare after he's been on SSDI for 27 months.  If he's really on SSI - social security income, NOT the disability type, he's not eligible for Medicare until he's 65, unless he's in renal failure.
