My son wants to go fishing?

ive not done it before and yes i live near rivers and the sea, which 1 is the best to do, hes 12.

Sea fishing from a boat is expensive; from a beach, unproductive and from rocks, dangerous.

Fishing rivers requires some skill and really needs an experienced angler on hand to advise.

The best bet is to go to a coarse fishery where the overstocked lakes will almost guarantee a catch.  Weekends are good because there will be plenty of "dads and their lads" around who will usually give advice to beginners.  Kit yourself out cheaply from the Argos catalogue and make sure you have a landing net.  A pint of maggots will provide enough bait for the two of you. They are both completely different. BUT whichever one he decides to pursue, he should never go by himself. He should be either with a friend or he should be supervised by an adult.

Perhaps a book on each river/lake/sea fishing will give him some idea of which he might prefer. Fish have to be above a certain size in order to be kept. You also require him to have a licence for river/lake fishing. some pier-fishing also requires a permit. To share the experience is what it's all about. Good Luck !!!

I personally would recommend taking him to a lake. I was in the same situation and i went to a lake and had a lot of fun. Now, don't overestimate the experience. You should always start a young person out small. Fly fishing was always the easiest way to catch crappies and bluegills when fishing in lakes or rivers. This is a very good way to teach fishing. If you try and teach them how to go for the big ones right away, i notice most young people will get board after about a half hour. If he has fun the first time, then you can progress up to bigger fish, using artificial lures.

I'd say river because your a novice.  My dad and I went fishing last year for the first time, we did not have a clue what to do, but it was still a blast!  Its not the fishing that matters, its spending time with your kid that is important.

Rivers, sea fishing is a lot more complicated and more expensive. A lake is actually the easiest place to and easiest to see the bobber.

Are you going to be in a boat?  I personally prefer river fishing unless I am in a boat.  Fishing off a pier and reeling the fishing line in get very tiring very fast. Also, I don't know what state you are in but be sure to check to see if he needs a fishing license.  One of the best  places to fish is state parks.  they usually have places that are easy to get to and that are set up for people that either donot fish alot or that are just getting into it.  If you want to go fishing in state parks, call or write your state's Outdoor resources to see which parks have fishing.

do either, i took my son first when he was four to the sea, me being vegetarian not a lot of experience so I was a beginner as well, we caught nothing, last new year took him to south Africa and we went river fishing and caught two each, just be careful casting they soon learn, but a few near misses read up on websites or ask an old hand or go buy a rod in a local shop not supermarket someone there will help you out how to attach hooks, floats etc, best not to do as i did first time and presumed it was easy, it is when you know..
