I know this is kinda backwards but that is the way it is...

Background: My homeschooled son, as a big, unique and long term community service project wants to start a scholarship fund. He is pursuing the Congressional Medals in all four areas and this is his goal for the community service category.

He has a huge collection (thousands) of sports cards (some really old), many of them are duplicates, that he inherited from his grandpa. His idea is to sell some of the duplicates using E-Bay charity auctions in order to seed a scholarship. Then he wants to start a letter writing campaign to athletes asking them to donate cards and memorabilia.

Here is where it is backwards: He needs a cause that really moves him / calls to him.

He asked this question several months back and only got a handful of non-sequitor responses.

Any thoughts on a really good cause - especially within the homeschool community?

He wants this to be his own: so no preexisting charity suggestions, pls.

  1. It's hard to find a cause for him, most of us have to find our own cause.

Deaf kids are one of my favourite causes. I'm pro-sign, so perhaps he can raise money for library books for a deaf school or something. He could even learn ASL (I assume you are in America) as a second language. I expect there are deaf homeschoolers, with the lousy state of deaf education. There's a whole different language and culture to explore. It has potential to be a life long interest. Plus, there are very few hearing guys who can sign, so they are very popular with the deaf girls. I don't know how old your son is, but that could be a good draw card ;)
