  1. Instead of having the kids bring gifts for your son, have them bring food or gently used clothing to donate to either a food bank or a clothing bank!  This is a great way to give back to society.  ENJOY!

  2. Roller skating? Ice skating? Bowling? Skating rinks and bowling alleys have kids party plans.

  3. buy him a necklace maybe. something that he'll have for a long time.

  4. Think about his own personality.  If he is the outdoors/construction type, perhaps the kids working to build a tree-house might be an idea, or if he is art-oriented, a fingerpainting party.  Musical?  a dj who might let them have a little supervised, hands on with the scratching techniques of playing new music.  Also, it might make a difference in your location, whether indoors or out.  Kids that age seem to like more hands on stuff, than pretty decorations all over the wall, for instance, a moon jump is much better than a house decorated like outer space.  For my nephew's birthday, he likes cowboy stuff, so everyone is dressing western, and there will be a rented pony there.  Also, to save money, think about things you have on hand to use to save on costs, and cheap balloons go a long way all over the floor!  Have Fun!!!

  5. One of the girls at work threw a karate birthday for her son.  They had a lesson, played some games. They broke a pinata, the birthday boy received and outfit and a birthday black belt, and helped cut the cake with a sword.

  6. Little guys like to eat, right?  So make lots of cupcakes and have each kid decorate them for a contest (maybe several areas) with a nice gift certificate for Target or ToyRUs or Walmart.  Have several colors of frosting, sprinklers, gummy critters, etc.  Then they get to each them.  Saves you having to make a cake.  Oh, yes and each kid puts on a candle that your son blows out!

A nice gift for your son would be gift certificates to places he likes.  I know my nephews that age love McDees but there are movie passes, pizza gift certs, you name it.

Another fun idea for the guys would be a treasure hunt.  You create each stage and sign with directions to the next and the group then has to solve the clues, using things from favorite shows that tie into something.   At the end is your son's gift from the family and then they all open the other gifts.

Parties don't have to be expensive just silly.
