  1. In many cases the picture size SHOULD change depending on exactly what is being broadcast. The majority of broadcast programs are NOT in hi-def and therefor you should see two black bars at the sides of your screen. In the evening on major networks is probably hi-def and then the picture should fill up your screen. You can always stretch the image and force it to fill up the screen but that looks horrible. I see many TVs set to the wrong aspect ratio especially in bars where the image is stretched side to side to improperly fill up the screen and this is the video equivalent of fingernails on chalkboard.

  2. I assume you have a widescreen TV of some description. If this is so almost certainly the widescreen setting is set to "Auto" which causes the picture to change depending on the broadcast signal being received. Often the picture will change and appear wrong due to a misread signal or broadcas error.

You will need to gain access to the picture set up menu and change the auto setting to a manual option probably 16:9. A lot will depend on how Sony have implemented screen choices in the set-up menu
