Question:

My spedometer, odometer, gas and oil guages, and my radio died in my truck. Is that my alternator?

My truck starts, the radio works (via cassette adapter), but my transmission jerks around. I can't accelerate past what I'm guessing is about 45 mph. A friend said it was my alternator, but is there something else too?

  1. Check your fuses

  2. Well,it's not your alternator...sounds like the ACCY fuse, but really need more info. Year, make, model, etc.

  3. that kinda sounds like the alternator but i dont know y the alernator would affect the transmission

  4. most likely the alternator. have the battery tested first. (should be free)

  5. Sounds like the alternator.

  6. the dash lights are a small level drain on the electrical, this is why a cars lights may light dimmly but the starter wont turn just clicks, nextly you said the cassette works but the radio doesn't and once again a radio draws far less power than the cassette. the 1st test for you is to start it and get a voltage reading from the top of the battery it should be around 13 volts plus if this is the case the alternator is fine. I suspect some under dash issue myself.

  7. .......actually, to answere this question it is nessacary to know what kind of truck you are asking about....make model year and engine type.   if the truck runs, i doubt if its your alternator.....the lack of power or trans problems COULD be electrical or ground problems.....the fact that the gauges are not working leads me to believe you have aproblem with the dashboard ground system...usually simple to  diagnos and repair.

  8. Man, get this checked out NOW. I had a blown rear turn signal bulb on my truck and the OD quit. The trans fluid started burning and I though we were going to blow the trans. I got a new bulb in and it corrected the shifting, but I still had to replace the fluid.

Check all the fuses and relays. Sometimes a stuck relay will really mess you up.

    Good luck

Oh, autozone will test the alternator for free if you carry it in.
