My steering seems to becoming a bit heavier lately does this mean i need more steering fluid? (1998fordescort)

i noticed today that when i turn my wheel right it seems to feel slightly more heavier than normal.

  1. it could be that and it can also be that your powered steering could be going bad  


  2. You might have some type of restriction in your steering rack or hoses, or the pump might not be creating enough pressure as its getting older. Always check your fluid and for leaks first though.

  3. Yes, Start with checking the fluid.  If the fluid is old I would recommend changing the power steering fluid.  If the fluid is OK, then listen for a whining noise when you move the wheels left to right. This could indicate a problem with the power steering pump.


  4. Check the fluid level first, but more than likely either there is a leak causing a loss in hydraulic pressure or more likely the steering rack is on it's last legs.

  5. Yes I would check the fluid 1st...easy to ckeck.
