Okay here is the deal, about 2 months ago i purchased a kicker cvr 12" subwoofer capable of 400 watt rms power. I am running a infinty 300watt rms power to this sub. My question is, is if you think maybe I am clipping my sub and need to purchase a higher wattage amp, or this is just normal for new subwoofers to smell this way. The smell kinda smells like something is overheating its kinda hard to explain. Well thank you guys

  1. you never want the gain turned all the way on your amp, and the burnt smell is cuz your sub is toast.

  2. That is probably the voice coils heating up and burning.

Like you said, you are probably clipping your amp.  You don't need to get a higher wattage amp to fix this though.  All you need to do is set the gain on the amp correctly.  As long as you do that you do not need to worry about your amp clipping.

The link below should help you set the gain correctly.  If you need more help just ask.

  3. well  i had the same problem i had 2 12'' and an infinty amp if it has that clip light on it what u need to do is turn up your gain all the way and baerly turn up bass boost or vice versa

what the clip is tellin u is that your sub is comein out to far so do what i said it will sound better

  4. Yes you are clipping the amp...either buy a larger amp OR you can just turn down the gains on the amp you have now.Your gonna have to sacrafice some bass by lowering your gains. What your trying to do is get more bass by over driving your amp.(clipping)

Its always best to adjust the gains with a meter instead of your ears for that reason.

  5. never have your gain over 3/4...about 1/2 should do. setting it with a DMM is highly recommended.
