Question:

My sunflowers don't have any flowers.?

I planted several sunflower seeds in early June. They grew like crazy and now are about seven feet tall and seem just as strong and healthy as can be, but there are NO flowers. Nothing that even looks like it might turn into a flower. In the center of the cluster of green leaves at the top are what looks like just more tiny leaves. What have I done wrong?

  1. It's okay, they will flower, just wait. I planted earlier than you did, and mine have only just this week formed a little green cluster that will turn into the one big flower at the top. Mine are also very tall, they're amazing, aren't they?!

  2. How often do you water? Often, over watering can lead to big plants with no flowers or fruit. Maybe try cutting back the water a bit.

Also, have you tried any fertilizer? Be sure to give it something high in phosphorous, but not high in nitrogen. Nitrogen will just cause it to grow more, without flowers.

When looking at fertilizer, there are always 3 numbers on the front. It should look like this: 10-2-18.

The first number is nitrogen, which helps with stem and leaf growth. The second number is phosphorous, which helps with fruit and flower production. The third number is potassium, which maintains the internal health of the plant.

  3. What looks like leaves are the flowers. As they grow they may get heavy so I supported mine with bamboo steaks and old panty hose cut into strips.

  4. Nothing, just give it more time. It takes 45 to 90 days to maturity. Depending on the variety.

  5. give it time they will grow

  6. 1.  give it more time, or

    2.  they're not really sunflower seeds.

  7. Nothing! it sounds like you planted RUSSIAN GIANTS

and they will take a little longer to bud up and bloom.

At least for me in North Central Massachusetts on the New Hampshire line in the United States.

  8. I believe "the more tiny leaves" may be the outside of the bloom.  If not just be patient and wait.  Wish mine were that tall but mine came about as dropped seeds from a feeder.
