Usually the rule of thumb is long first name for short last name and vice versa.  I ppersonally didnt follow that rule when naming my children but it does sound better....

James is a favourite name of mine and is also a family name of ours, my eldest son has it as a middle name as has my brother and father.

Nice enough. But don't you think Jay as a middle name is confusing? People will never know whether it's Toby J Keen or Toby Jay Keen.

He will spend his life answering the question "What does the J stand for"!

Or maybe that's the point.
