  1. Look for orange coax digital connections, it's possible your receiver has that. If your receriver does not have either optical or coax then look for 3 pairs of red/white stereo connections labeled multi-channel input. If your dvd player also has this same connection then this would be the only way to connect for 5.1 surround.

And no there are no adapters that can connect fiber optic to analog stereo inputs.

  2. Well, it would be good if you'd state your question in further details, but I'll just generalize. If you don't have an optical, coaxial, or analog multichannel out, and you're planning on connecting to a Dolby Digital or DTS decoder, then you won't be getting true surround sound. An adapter won't help you. You might as well connect with standard analog stereo audio cables.  If you need any more clarification, please expand the question with further details on your system.

  3. Let me guess - you bought a "system' that contains a DVD player built in, and some plastic speakers. You spent about $300 - right?

These are not expandable like a system made up of a stand-alone receiver, DVD player, speakers are.

You might have L/R RCA inputs which you can feed signals, but thats about it.
