My surroundsystem isn't working with my tv in general?

it only works w/ DVD's CD'setc but like it doesn't work with cable...

is it not suppose to?

It's very possible it's not available from the Cable Co.  It's possible you've got it set to Dolby (5.1 channels) decoding and it is available only in Stereo (2 channel).  It's possible you've got the cable box hooked up to the dvd player and, therefore, you have to have it "on" and set to DVD on your stereo system to hear a stereo signal.
