  1. add 8-8-8 fertilizer at growing stages of 12" and 36" . use about 6 lbs.per 100'. If the stalks get at least 1" of rain per week that should work.If not water or irrigate . When ears start to silken apply seven dust or spray a mixture of liquid 7 mixed with with water (2 oz per gal )on the silked ears  every three to four days. This will help control the pests.

  2. could be a lack of potassium, add a dose of regular garden fert.
