Yes it is running water....is the O ring the big ring inside the filter lid or the small ring inside the pump lid?

  1. Is it pumping water?  The pumps are louder when they are not primed (i.e., pumping air, not water).  Mine often has that problem when the O-ring that surrounds the catch lid blows.  You may be able to reset the o-ring (if that is the problem), or go to the local pool supply with the name and model of your pump, and they probably have more in stock.

That is my guess.  If it is the problem, turn it off until you get it fixed.  It can burn out the pump.

I was referring to the small ring in the pump lid.  I have never opened by filter.  Mine is the type that I always clean by back-washing and then adding DE material in the skimmer.

  2. we always tell our customers that it could be your bearings that are probably going out on the pump they usually tend to make a loud squealing sound and if it just hums when you turn your pump on its probably an impeller locked up and either needs to be freed up or it could be cracked and need replacing. either way if you replace the motor or impeller its best to replace the shaft seal inside anytime you change that they get old to and wear down easily. take it to your local pool store to see if they can repair it. we usually send ours to like a motor place and see if they can repair them around here we have kirby risk or motorcraft not sure whats in your area.

  3. A description of the noise would be helpful here. Is it coming from the volute (wet end) or the motor for example? Is it a buzzing or or a whine?

There are a lot of possibilities here. It may be the entire pump is being held up a smidge by the suction line after the equipment pad has settled over winter and the base is vibrating against the concrete( a buzz). It may be the bearings in the motor ( a whine or scream). It may be the windings ( a hum). It may be a obstruction in the suction line or in the impeller ( pump just sounds much louder as it struggles and cavitates).

Edit: It's not a Jacuzzi Magnum by any chance is it?
