Question:

My tax stimulus check

I moved prior to receiving my tax stimulus check and didn't get my mail forwarded in time. It's past due to receive my check and my bitter ex-wife says it never came which I doubt. If no one has cashed the original can I get it re-issued to my new address?

  1. Even if she got it and cashed it you can report it stolen. They will arrest her for forging your name.

They will reinstate the check in both names, or however the check was originally issued. Then you have to work it out with her as to how you will split the check.

  2. You needed to change your address with the IRS, did you?

    CHANGE OF ADDRESS

    Q. To which address will my stimulus payment be mailed?

    A. The stimulus payment will be mailed to your last known address the IRS has on file.

    Q. I have moved since filing my 2007 tax return. How will my payment reach me?

    A. Anytime that you move, you should file a Form 8822 with the IRS and a change of address notice with the U.S. Postal Service. This will ensure correspondence and payments from the IRS will be sent to your new address. If the check has already been mailed and you did not provide an update, the check will likely be returned to the IRS. You may call the IRS at 1-866-234-2942 to report a new address so your check can be reissued.

  3. Use the program at irs.gov to see if a) it was issued, b) when it was issued and c) if it's already been returned to the IRS.

If returned, you need to get a COA to the IRS (form 8822 or call).

If not returned and it's been more than a month, call or form 3911.

  4. Call the IRS and ask  tell them you did not receive your check. Also ask if it has been cashed. You can call them at 1-800-829-1040.

    Good Luck.
