i am libertarian, and i am 14, and on the first day we filled out a paper and then had to read it and i put it on interesting facts. (i didnt know we had to read it, or turn it in, stupid me)

well a student asked me to explain, so i did

and this one kid is like "so that means you think the government shouldn't care when people commit suicide?"

and i said more or less (i should have said that the government shouldnt mess with our personal lives, and that a small government is best but i was slightly rattled by his rude comment)

anyways so the teacher (old) is like, good point (looking at the guy)

and then gave me a cold look

isnt that like discriminatory?

  1. yes, and if he treates you a differently, ask for a change for your teacher becuase sometimes once you are on the teachers bad side, it may never be removed.

just behave normal and if does seem like he does not like you, ask for a schedule change.

  2. First, it's great that you are a libertarian at such a young age!  Work further to explain and debate your beliefs.

Second, you could have easily handled the suicide comment by stating simply that government programs cannot and will not cure or prevent suicide.  Any response to that could have been countered with:  "a good privately funded or not for profit crisis/counseling center would help better than creating a "War against suicide!"

Third, I'm sure this teacher as well as most won't be very receptive to libertarian views.  Not much you can do about that except learning to express and back up your viewpoints well.  Even if the teacher is biased against your views, you can still do well and earn their respect.

  3. I would just let it go if you continue to get discriminated against then I would complain

  4. No, it's not "like discriminatory", it IS discriminatory.  Get used to it.  The government schools are owned by the left, and you are in for  a rough ride.  You are going to be the odd man out, and you are going to get flack over it.   Stand your ground.  Learn to present your case well, or go underground.

Asking questions is one good way to get people to start thinking.  Don't expect to find much thinking going on around you.  It will be almost entirely emotion driven knee jerk reactions.  That's the left, and that's most people these days.

  5. I don't think your teacher was being discriminatory...I think your teacher was trying to get you to use some critical thinking skills and defend your position.  And, at the beginning of the school year, getting students to participate in such a discussion can be difficult...you provided a great way to try and start one.

If you feel that strongly about the situation and the teacher continuously gives you flak over your beliefs, then you can make it an issue.  Honestly, I think your teacher really was just trying to spark a classroom discussion.

  6. Your teacher is ignorant, that's the problem with our society today, no one wants to take responsibility for themselves, instead they want the government to regulate their lives so that they can have someone to blame for their mistakes.

You just keep on believing what you believe and don't let anyone rattle you.

  7. I think that working in a library is noble work......

  8. If he is giving you lower grades and discriminating against you in THAT matter, then that is one thing.

If he doesn't agree with you, he just doesn't agree with you. You will find many people who don't agree with you in life.

Like you, he has the right to disagree with your stance in the same manner you disagree with his politics.

But just because you two will never vote the same way doesn't mean he is a bad teacher or that he dislikes you. As a teacher, I can tell you that sometimes you can want to pull your hair at over a kid's behavior, but it doesn't make you dislike him or treat him differently.

If this is the first week of school, don't freak out. Personally, I think it is cool someone so young has such strong political beliefs that you are finding it as part of your identity.

Besides, I do want to point out teachers are just as human as any other person. For all you know someone he was close to committed suicide, so the other student's comment really hit a nerve. And honestly, it was a good comment because it facilitated a discussion that is important (as you as a libertarian knows!) regarding how involved the government should get in our lives. In fact, the teacher might not have even meant to give you a "cold" look. He might have been wanting to see if you would rise to the challenge of defending your POV.

Regardless, don't freak out. See what this school year brings. Even if your teacher doesn't appreciate your view points doesn't mean he is going to treat you unfairly.
