I have this teacher that has been horrible at giving grade updates. Actually, none so far. My whole class has been asking for them, but she said she wasn't giving them. She even said, she doesn't didn't provide grade updates for her other class and that's why she wasn't going to give grade updates to our class. Is it true that teachers are not required to give requested grade up dates?

  1. I never, not once, received a grade update while in college.  I found out my grades when they were posted.

I think the other responses you have been given assumed high school teachers.  College teachers are not under the same scrutiny as high school teachers.  I would check with your college department secretary to see if there are any requirements regarding grades.  Otherwise, I think you'll have a pretty good estimate, based on the graded materials you have received back, and your own participation, attendance, etc.

  2. when i was in college . my teachers left them on the door after all our quizzes and tests or posted them online but if the whole class is failing they give them out . all teachers have different policies . high school and jr and elementary they HAVE to provide but in college your suppose to able to figure out what your grade is if you turned in all your work.

  3. Sorry dude. doesn't violate anything. I think its kinda strange, but, beyond that, she does it to all her classes, so she is even handed. YOu should know about what your grade is. If you don't, then you need to start. I'd have started from day one. ONce you know how a teacher works, you have to adapt. Simple as that. this is College, not high school where grade checks are given out. It is your responsibility. The intangibles are something that you control. If it is her timeliness of returning papers, that's a whole different ball of wax.

  5. Sounds like a question for your principal and/or parents.

A teacher should have a reasonable amout of time to grade papers and return them to students, and probably doesn't have to update the whole class all the time of all their prior grades, but if asked individually, a good teacher should let a student know their individual grades.

However, a good student should keep track of their grades and not pester the teacher all the time.

So, if this is a case of NEVER returning grades, then you should expect to get them. But, if the teacher has returned all papers/test with grades, and your class is demanding a list of those grades, then maybe not.

  6. Teachers are required to report five times per year. Two of those are usually parent-teacher interviews and three of them are report cards. Teachers are not required to give grade updates when requested as it takes quite some time to compile all of the data available and turn it into a simple percentage or letter grade.
