My volleyball team would be so great if they would only communicate when they are playing! I've got practice today, and another game tomorrow so I don't want to tire them out too much, but they need to start communicating NOW. Does anyone know some good drills we could do today?

  1. if they don't call the ball, they will have a punishment...pushups, running, sprints, whatever you can think of.  if NOBODY is talking, EVERYBODY has to run, condition etc.  if they don't talk, say if they don't start talking, that you will condition the rest of the practice.  this USUALLY makes them start talking.

    good luck!!!!!!!

  2. Just make them call the ball when needed. If they want to win they will improve naturally.

Don't push too hard. They might be just a little shy at the beginning of a new season.

  3. there are no drills for that. you have to make them talk. you cant really do anything to do taht though, they have to do it themselves.

  4. Wow everyone is so punitive.

Play king of the court kind of game with 2 or 3 girls on each side of the net.

The twist is you have to call the ball every single time or your whole team is kicked off and the next team rotates on.. so you can not only have to go to the back of the line for messing up like regular king of the court, but no the coach or next team waiting can call you off for not calling the ball. If your girls are competitive they will want to stay on the court and will start to develop habit of calling the ball (or other communication skill you target). and its fun!

  5. My team was doing the same thing, and we would keep dropping balls becasue we would never call and then there would be two people going for the ball, and then we would both back off!! It was really bad!!!!

The next practice, our coach had us pick a partner, and then tell them what we were doing that weekend.....yelling!!  It totally worked!!!  It was really fun, and we did really good at communicating.

Another idea is to get one of those decibel measurers that have a light that flashes whenever you are being louder than what you set it to.  Set it up to 50 to 70 decibels during practice, and say that it better be going off whenever you are doing drills where you need to be communicating in.  And you could think of some reward for them, if it is going off, but don't be a softie-be really strict about it-they absolutely do not get the prize if it doesn't go off enough!!!!

    hope that this helps!

  6. Well freshman year being new to each other we never talked but  were all pretty vocal now.  Our coach would have us scrimmage for a full 3 hour practice.  Everytime the ball hit the floor without someone calling it or if no one called it the whole team had to run from the gym to the far parking lot and back rain/shine or heat.  Its about a 1/4 mile there and a 1/4 mile back.  After about the 3rd practice we nailed the art of talking on the court.  The team will hate the drill but it works.

  7. yeah if u don't call the ball or it drops when u just stare at ppl do 20 jumping jacks or if it's to easy do 5 laps around the court

  8. i was assistant coach on a volleyball team and what I came up with was have them stand in a single file line right behind boundary on one side of the court.  First person comes forward, pass the the ball (while calling it) and then advance to the next position while the next girl comes into court, toss the ball between the two girls...for each error (not calling, calling and not acting, not calling or acting) have each girl do an "intensity check" (can be 10 push ups, 20 sit ups, whatever you want to make it) and come back to the court and continue this until they CALL THE BALL AND ACT ON IT WITHOUT ERROR.  try to keep only 2 girls on the court at a time, as it can get confusing and take longer for rotation if there's more than that.  Also, lets say player 1 (p1) and player 2 (p2) are on court.....you toss the ball to the center, p1 calls it, acts and passes back...p2 should remain on the court until she calls a ball and goes for it...if she remains on the court more than 2 rotations, she will do an intensity check...this will teach the girls/guys to be Aggressive, Talk on court and be HUNGRY for the ball (cause they don't want to have to do an intensity check.

another good idea...is to keep a tally during a game for instance...everytime a certain girl DOESNT call the ball and touches it, she gets a tally....everytime a ball drops between two girls they BOTH get tally's etc. and then the next practice they have they have to do intensity check for each tally under their name =)

  9. your coach should make you run everytime your team doesn't talk, then everyone would talk.
