this will be a gift from me. he needs the usual GPS with the added advantages of off roading, anywhere. price could be a consideration but it depends mostly on the 4wd capacity.

  1. I recently bought a Magellan "crossover" for this very purpose and am very happy with it's street and tracks abilities. Cost about a grand from BCF for the package but has longitude/latitude input ability as well as marine functions with the right software. Here's a link https://www.nextdestination.com.au/Pages...

  2. A few recommendations would be a Magellan CrossOverGPS or a new Nuvi 500, both units have the ability for 4wd.

You can rent a unit from GPS4Rent to test out if your son can use it efficiently. Rent a Magellan CrossOverGPS with Off Road Navigation capabilities and try it out. http://gps4rent.com/product-view-339.htm...

And if you are ready to buy one, you can buy a NOH Magellan CrossOverGPS for only $199 which includes the latest version 2 mapping software just released from Magellan.  Auto Nav 2000 Plus, Inc. http://www.autonav2000.com/mall/anProdDe...
