I got braces on April 19th, or around that date. Anyway, I only got them on the bottom, i get the top ones in October. my teeth are already really straight from them, and I REALLY want them off. Why do I still need them?

I'm 14 years old by the way.

  1. To help you out on the retainer front.  Because when you get those puppies off, you're not going to want to wear your retainer all the time.  Sure, you'll start off with good intentions, but eventually, it'll get thrown in the trash or you'll forget, and then it will hurt a bunch when you put it back in and re-shift your teeth.  And then eventually when you decide to quit wearing that retainer, your teeth will go all jaggedy on you.

The retainer is a pain too, it just gives you the option to have a normal smile occasionally.

Just go along with it.  Don't rush things and forget your retainer, because it will be a waste if your teeth go back like mine did.  Not just a pain because of the money your parents spent, but a pain for all that time and misery you went through for nothing!

  2. I'd say it's to make sure that they stay that way for a while, THEN you move on to a retainer. Many people have braces for years before they get them off.

  3. the orthodontist knows what they're doing, but if you really don't want them then talk to them about it

  4. Your teeth and mouth and body might still be growing and if your growing they can easily shift so they have to have tehm in a tigh tform fitting thing (braces) before they can move you into a retainer

  5. i think they keep them on so your teeth don't shift back to where they were before.

  6. even if your teeth are straight, it is a recent change and your orthodontist is making sure your teeth settle in place. they also make sure your bottom and top are aligned and you have no over/under bite. then the retainers keep them from shifting because your teeth will always have a slight tendency to do that.

  7. Well they are right, To keep them that way is the answer.  Retainers are like step two and the braces are step one.  Your teeth are spreaded out and the braces pull them together and leave them there so they can harden enough to switch to retainers.  If you put retainers on right now it would just bend it out of shape and you would need your braces back on again.  The retainer holds it in place long enough to harden so that they wouldn't go back to normal with zero support

  8. The reason you have to keep the braces on the bottom on is because off your bit. The only way to correct the bit is through rubberbands, and you need both sets, top and bottom, to do this.

Once you get your braces on the top, and they are straight, then they will give you rubberbands to correct your bite. Thats why you need the ones on the bottom. You just have to wait

for your top teeth to catch up.

Im guessing the reason you don't have top braces yet, is because you have an expander, my sister had one of these, and she was thinking exactly what you are," why can't my bottom come off."

Its because both top and bottom have to be straight to have rubberbands, and you have to have rubberbands to correct the bite, and finish the treatment

"It isn't always about being straight, its about being in the correct position."

Thats what my ortho always says.

    GOOD LUCK with your treatment!!!!!!!!!!-------d:^)

  9. My son just got his braces off and his teeth have been straight.  They look at the bite too.  I would ask your dentist why they appear to be straight but he is keeping them on?  I asked the dentist alot of questions and the plan was very clear and made it so much easier.  Good Luck and it will be worth all the time you've had them on.
