Question:

My tennis strings keep breaking?

Alright. I've got a head liquid metal 4 pro raquet and i've broken the strings that came with the raquet. I restrung it again, I broke those and then I restrung it again and broke those. I put a crapload of top spin on my hits and I dont treat my raquet badly. I'm pretty sure the top spin destroys my strings but is there any way I can get my raquet strung so that i can still hit topspin and not break my strings? Do I go for higher tension or lower? Are there any special strings? I hate having to keep spending so much money on restringing. I'm not Rafa Nadal but for some reason it seems like im breaking them every few weeks.

Oh and I'm not giving the best answer to someone who doesn't explain themselves. Thanks.

  1. Where are you breaking your strings? If its breaking in the middle of the racquet you might need more durable strings, if you're breaking them near the top of the frame on the mains or near the sides on the crosses, you might be miss hitting bc strings are particularly weak by the frames and if it catches there too much it'll break (i was popping strings on the mains near the top of the frame bc i was hitting the ball on my serve too much there).

I hit with loads of topspin as well (extreme semiwestern) and I'm a pretty big hitter, I average about 1-2 months with strings. I string with a nice poly string (polys are very durable) on the mains (kirschbaum supersmash 1.30 or 16 gauge) and wilson nxt's (just for a softer feel) on the crosses.

If you're a big hitter, string it up a tad higher (i string at 61 lbs on my babolat apd). What i usually do is I have 2 of my apd's set up identically and I alternate the racquets during play (either every other match or when the grip gets too sweaty). Going back and forth like this helps me extend the life of the strings a bit. But definitely if you're hitting alot and with lots of topspin, you should look to string with poly's (luxilon big bangers, topspin cyberflash, kirschbaum, pro hurricanes, etc). A full poly set up might be a bit harsh on your arm so make sure to put some nice synth strings on the crosses.

If you don't want to deal with a hybrid set up technifibre makes some really good synth strings that are very durable.

Lastly have your tennis stringer check out the racquet, make sure theres no sharp edges on the grommets or something that could be causing your strings to break.

  2. Same thing was happening to me so I started using the Babolat ice string.. It is something like that. Then I sometimes put a different kind of string for the crosses

  3. Luxilon Big Banger: the unbreakable string.  Unfortunately, it loses its feel after a few weeks. After that, Luxilon gets really stiff, and can cause arm problems (especially if you're an old guy with existing arm problems!) if you don't cut them out and restring them. String your racquet with Luxilon in the mains, and a synthetic string in the crosses (unless you can afford Natural Gut).  Buy stringer (Klippermate or Gamma X-2), and start stringing your own racquets - you'll save money in the long run.
