Question:

My theory on estrogen and testosterone, is it right??

so its scientifically proven that higher estrogen means you have a higher need to control and be in charge, but this hormone does not make you stronger or make you get a deep voice or a lot of hair

testosterone makes you be stronger, get a deeper voice and more hair, but it doesnt make you want to dominate more

so wouldnt this mean that women are more dominant in sense they have more estrogen?? no because women dont have enough muscle or testosterone to dominate. women want to dominate but they cant.

men dont have a big need to dominate because their estrogen levels are low even if they have a lot of muscle. men dont want to dominate but they easily could.

i think its right because that thing about estrogen making want to dominate is scientifically proven.

i think also guys in prison have higher estrogen levels then the average person

so is it right?

  1. The article you linked us to (and those linked by it to related articles) clearly indicate that estrogen in women has a similar effect on women as testosterone in men has on men when it comes to dominance. It appears that some of your respondents are only seeing one part of this. If women are motivated to dominate by increased levels of estrogen and men are similarly motivated by increased levels of testosterone, then all one might conclude is that being a more womanly woman or manly man increases each gender's desire to dominate. That, and other research being done, may indicate that women should not seek to masculinize themselves just to obtain similar benefits of manly men.

  2. So how do our male Anti feminist...who want and need to control and dominate women.  You know the "women belong in the kitchen types" fit in on this?

They have a higher level of estrogen?

  3. It seems like you didn't even properly read the article you have quoted, which clearly states:

"Our findings perfectly parallel what we have observed for power motivation and testosterone in men," Schultheiss said. "In men, power motivation is associated with heightened levels of testosterone, particularly after a contest victory."

What these researchers are suggesting is that the primary 'maleness' hormone, testosterone, and the primary 'femaleness' hormone, oestrogen, each have a role to play in competition.

Your contention regarding the oestrogen levels of men in prison is also factually incorrect.

Not only to most male inmates have higher than 'average' testosterone levels, but the same journal you cited for this article has another article in which researchers note that women in prisons, particularly violent inmates, have higher testosterone levels than women in the general population.

    Cheers :-)

  4. That is a study you provided a link for, which they did not even state the sample size, not scientific proof of anything. It is not as simple as who have what hormones in their body but the chemical balance and the body's ability to process and cope. If what you say were true, then fat men, since they have more estrogen than the average man, should be on the rampage.

  5. yeah I trust the scientific evidences and I think your theory is plausible. But there's not much advantage of being muscular and physically strong ever since the society has progressed as high tech where people easily can use machines and weapons as alternatives to the human physical strength that men could have contributed to the society before the technology and mechanical progression. anyway, back to the hormones, ur argument is quite plausible only except the last statement assuming guys in prison have higher estrogen levels. if you wanted to compare the hormonal influences on people wanting to be in control or under control, i think it would be more effective if you compare the transsexuals who regularly have shots of estrogen and testosterone.

  6. No, you're wrong dude. Also the main female hormone is called estradiol - an estrogen, the same way the main male hormone is called testosterone - an androgen.

No testosterone is the hormone shown to increase need to dominate/aggression/competitiveness/ masculine physical attributes.

Women dominate in a different more passive aggressive way in general than men, and these women tend to have higher testosterone levels, but not as high as men's.

Women's cognitive differences are due to the way their brain is structured due to estrogen, not testosterone.

  7. Wait a minute, you think men don't want to dominate?  Are you effing kidding me?

  8. I think your totally right!

  9. Where r you getting this from?? doesn't sound scientific to me, sorry

  10. No, its not right, its silly and its not scientifically proven, you made it up.

EDIT - Never sent me the article and it does claim that estrogen fuels women to want control and power, but its a psychological study.  It is a good article and website though.

  11. Why does one need muscle to dominate? Please think of changing your name.

  12. First, I would hate to make any predictive theory based solely on the levels of only 2 of the hundreds of hormones the human body produces.  Second, even if I could get decent numbers from just these 2 hormones I would include some important environmental factors like family income, level of education, and a host of other predictors.  Third,  you might want to look at the uncertainties and the sample sizes in those studies you were reading, you will probably find that the percentage error is way over the accepted 10 %.

  13. From the article you cited:

"New University of Michigan psychology research suggests that the s*x hormone *estrogen may be for women what testosterone is for men*: The fuel of power." (stars mine for emphasis).

"Our findings perfectly parallel what we have observed for power motivation and testosterone in men," Schultheiss said. "In men, power motivation is associated with heightened levels of testosterone, particularly after a contest victory. In women, estrogen appears to be the critical hormone for power motivation."

I would star the whole thing, but if you read closely and use your reading comprehension skills, you'll have your answer. Your own source clearly and consistently stated that testosterone is linked to the drive for power in men.

I guess testosterone has nothing to do with logical ability.

Your "theory" is wrong. Cute try though.

Both genders have a drive toward power. Men resort to brute force because that's the only thing men are better at than women. Men are also less secure in themselves, unless they can appear dominant. Women, for the most part, just know that we are less expendable and we don't need to neurotically prove our superiority. When women do feel the need to dominate, we can do so without moving a muscle.

To be a woman is to be power. A man may seek power, and some attain it, but most do not. Usually male power depends on coercing a woman into giving her power over. How sad.
