My third eye was throbbing today. Later I found out my Aunt passed away. was this just a coincidence?

It could mean you have a special gift going on here.  Were you close your aunt?    Monitor this (hopefully it won't happen again), maybe it was just a coincidence.

I have heard of that happening using the mechanism you are describing (random psychic powers), but its also quite possible this was just a total coincidence.

I guess the main question I'd need answered is "how common is it for your 3rd eye to start activating?"  If this happens every month, I wouldn't read too deeply into it (or if you were doing a practice which triggered it) but if this was one of the only times its ever gone on, you might have random psychic powers.

Truthfully though, odds are that's not the case; that situation is much rarer.
