Question:

My thornless blackberries are not sweet at all. Made a very attractive cobbler but had to pour the sugar to it

  1. Sounds like you have a soil problem. Check with your county extention office to run a soil sample.


  2. You may be doing what I did when I first started picking mine.

    I didn't leave mine on long enough.

    If you have to pull on them to get them off they are not ripe enough. They should fall off at the slightest touch. And make sure they are all black no red at all.

    The problem these days is the Japanese Beetles know when they are ripe too.:( you will never see them on a berry that isn't ripe.

  3. During very rainy, wet summers berries will take up lots of water and be very juicy.  But the flavor tends to be more bland in wet years.
