Question:

My toddler is sooooo clingy, what can I do?

He is 18 months, and truly is a mummy's boy. He follows me around the house like a puppy, trying to climb up my legs so I can't go anywhere. He even cries when I take a shower, or am cooking dinner. His granny takes him to nursery while I go to work, and it breaks my heart as he wants me to go with them and I can't. He sleeps in the bed with me at night (yes I know this is 100% wrong, but when he was newborn it seemed the only way I could get sleep) he even wants to sit on my knee while I am eating at the table.

This problems seems to have got a lot worse this last month or so. What can I do to help this, I don't want him to grow up and be teased at school for being a "Mummy's boy". Please help.

  1. I would try to break the habit of him sleeping in your bed with you right away. That could be part of the reason why he is so clingy, if he is so used to being at your side 24/7 he is not going to learn any independence on his own...you don't want to end up sharing your bed with a 4 year old!

And not all toddlers are like this, my 19 mth old  isn't. She's so interested in exploring the world around her, that me trying to holding her or pick her up slows her down! She goes off and does her own thing.

  2. enjoy it while it lasts because he will out grow it and then you'll want him to be around you and he won't want to.

  3. This is perfectly normal, all toddlers are like this.

  4. Forget about it.  He's 18mos old.  He's SUPPOSED to my a mama's boy.  He'll either outgrow it, or not.  I don't see kids getting teased for being a mama's boy...I see boys getting beat up moreso for saying mean stuff about someone elses mama.

I almost forgot, kids tend to be more 'clingy' around 18mos to 30mos.  It's totally normal.

  5. i don't see that as a problem. enjoy it because soon he'll outgrow it and won't have time for you!!
