Question:

My toilet won't flush?

Ok, so I don't know what's wrong with my toilet, and I don't want to just go buy random parts to see if I can fix it. So the problem is... The tank doesn't seem to fill up with enough water, and my bowl fills up about half way full with water, which it never used to do. If I hold down the little lever in my toilet tank until it reaches the fill line, then it will flush. I have tried adjusting it, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I don't have the float that looks like a big ball, I've actually never seen this kind of float before so I'm not sure what to do. Anyone got any ideas what the problem could be?

  1. I had this problem and the plumber told me to go up on the roof with a plumber's snake and clean out the vent thing of leaves etc.  Seems there was not enough air or whatever going through for a good flush.  And by golly, it worked.

  2. go to Home Depot, buy a toilet tank repair kit for 20 bucks...guts must be bad....

the kit has everything, the rubber gasket for between toilet and tank, the fill pipe and float (even though there appears to be no float, thats what that black thing is that slides up and down the fill pipe thing)

anyways, you should be good..get the kit, and in 30 min everything will be back to normal

  3. They call that a fill valve if its not the old fashioned ball float then the common ones would be a fluid master 400A,which is in the link below,on the rod that connects down to the float it should rotate to adjust it not, it might be easier to get a new one. They run about $12 long as you have a shut off near your toilet and an adjustable wrench and teflon tape it will be fairly easy to replace. On the package it gives you step by step instructions as to how to change.basically shut off water to toilet........flush toilet to empy water. disconnect supply line to toilet.remove plastic nut on bottom of tank which holds fill valve,  remove fill vavle and remove rubber washer. Then put the new one in the order you took the old one out .tighten just snuggly to the tank and wrap alittle teflon tape around the bottom thread when you reconnect the supply line and it should work as new.GL

  4. On the tube that is attached to the water line there should be a valve type thing, that you remove the handle and turn the valve up ward and this should adjust your water level to a higher setting.  If this still doesn't work then you will have to replace that valve.  Which you shut the water off drain the reservoir disconnect the water line going up into the tank  Then un s***w valve assembly and replace with new   re-attach water line and turn water back on   Check for leaks and re-adjust level that you need

  5. Is the fill valve black and gray  ? if so it is most likely an fluidmaster 400a fill valve .they are very common . If so you will most likely need to replace  the  valve seal  most likely  a 242 . You do this by snaping of the top little cover . it should come off rather easily with a slight up and back  motion .than take the  float arm and turn it slightly counterclockwise and it should come off. the valve seal is right under there .the seal just slides off the needle  . If the fill valve is yellow  it is most likely an american standard fill valve and i recommend going to home depot or any hardware store and  buy a 400a  , you most likely don't need a complete repair kit. as that can be a bit of a hassle sometimes ,sort of a pandoras box really .
