  1. The dirt added will help as the stake solves its immediate problem. Tomatoes are one of the few plants whose stems will turn to roots .It may show some stress while recovering, but it should be fine in the long run.

  2. It will if it has a branch or branches growing on it with leaves it probably will.  A tomato plant relies heavily on converting chlorophyll to energy. It uses its leaves to do this. So if there are no leaves left the chances of it surviving is next to zero. You can add its chances of survival 10 percent with about every 3 leaves its has. But like I said no leaves means throw it on the compost pile.

  3. I don't think it will survive. One of mine broke at the top and the next day that part was shriveled and dead.

  4. It will be ok.  If the stem broke completly off, new stems will branch out anyway.  The energy used to grow the whole plant will be used to make more of the plant and keep it alive.  If you havent begun to sprout tomatoes or even blooms yet, I would go ahead and just get rid of the top part of the stem or put the part that broke off in water and leave outside until it grow roots and replant it soil, then you will have two tomatoe plants.

You can hack a plant down to almost a half an inch above soil, sometimes less, and it will grow back, sometimes even more healthy and beautiful.

  5. My tomato plant was hit by a basketball this year. It was about a foot high and it broke in half. I took care of it like regular and now it is growing out of control. So I can attest to the fact that it will continue to grow as long as you give it plenty of water each day. I water once a day in the morning. About 3 Times a week I give my plants a shot of Miracle Gro while I water. You will need a tomato cage to help it stand up.

With a little love your plant should bless you with some juicy red delicious fruit. Happy Growing!  Have fun!
