Question:

My tomato plants are rotting at the bottom now starting up to the top the other plants leaves are turning brow

I used straw to cover around the plants I put compost on the garden maybe too much. some of the plants are all vine very few blossoms.I had good tomatoes in the same garden last year.

  1. That doesn't sound good!  I want to say you have one of the tomato wilts, like Fusarium wilt or verticilium wilt.  Both are common here in the Southwest and are borne in the soil.

    Also check for russet mites...supertiny red pests

  2. you have blight , to late to save them now, don't keep growing in same place ,pull them up if it spreads to them all and burn them , no good in the compost as the virus will spread

  3. Hmmmm...maybe the straw has something funky in it that is affecting the tomato plants - or maybe it's retaining too much water, hence the rotting. You could get an at home soil analysis kit for a few bucks - maybe that will give you some insight into what's going on. Good luck!

  4. Either a fungus (easy to get from straw) or overwatering.

  5. blossom end rot is usually caused by the lack of calcium in the soil.Take a soil sample to your county agent or garden center.Start applying a tomato friendly plant food or fertilizer.
