Question:

My tomatoe plant is turning brown at the bottom of the plant. Mainly the stem and leaves.Is this natural?

  1. If the rest of the plant is so big that it blocks light to the bottom, that is not bad. Mine are five feet tall now and the base leaves are sun deprived.


  2. spray it with 24D

  3. May be the watering.  Dig down about 2 inches and see if the soil stick together in your hand.If not its to dry. At least here in Ca.

  4. If you mean the stem is becoming woody and the bottom leaves are old and getting ready to fall off, and the newer leaves are green and the plant is growing then that is normal. If the plant is turning brown and dieing then that is not normal. If the dirt dries out with a lot of salts in it then that would damage the plant. A tomato plants needs to have the same level of moisture all the time. If the dirt is moist and then dries out and then you water it again and it dries out etc then the tomatoes that grow will have blossom-end rot until the moisture stays around all the time.

    By the way, 2,4-D is a plant killer and will kill your tomatoes and most other plants. So, don't spray them with that!
