My tooth broke where I previously had a root canal years ago. Help!?

I think it was 5 years ago that I had some fillings in my teeth (I have a sweet tooth and that is the price I pay, darn it). Some of the teeth to be filled were so bad that the dentist had to give me a root canal. The teeth I am talking about were on the upper right side of my mouth, facing my gums of my inner cheeks. Throughout the years the teeth that had the root canal turned more and more grayish, until one and a half month ago when part of the filling on the sides of my teeth went missing, exposing just a tiny, yet visible, hole. Today I looked in the mirror (I used to check it every day) and to my horror, I saw that my tooth (just one, on the outer part of the filling) had broken, exposing the filling underneath. I was so gutted, yet I knew this tooth would be coming off one way or another. Now, I am going to book an aappointment with the dentist tomorrow and I am wondering what to expect, I think I will need a crown for that tooth? Or will he have to pull it out? Please tell me. I am afraid in case the filling itself starts to get worn out by chewing and there is no way that I can leave it like this for a long time, is there?

You may be able to save the tooth, you may not. It is a shame that your dentist did not crown the tooth right after the root canal. The tooth becomes more prone to breakage after a root canal, due to the blood supply being removed when the nerve is taken out.

It is standard practice to do the crown ASAP after a root canal.See what the dentist says,after an x-ray is taken. Good luck.

Till you see your dentist, donot chew from right side and try to take soft diet. Depending upon the tooth structure that is left, your dentist can either give you crown or can give post and core and above that he will put crown. for more information on dental topics you can visit www.identalhub.com
