  1. When you are single and raising a child, your basic federal exemption doubles, as long as the child has not income of their own (don't laugh. It happens).

In this case, you wouls not be subject to any Federal income taxes until your income reaches about $19,200.

Your provincial taxes are calculated separately. The exemption amounts vary from one province to the next, but you shouldn't be subject to any provincial taxes either. You should be getting back all of the $786.

Which province are you living in?

And to peege... Our taxes might be high, but at least people don't go automatically bankrupt when they get cancer.

  2. You wouldn't owe any tax for the year, and would get back everything that was withheld.  You should also get an Earned Income Credit, so will get more than you paid in.

  3. Did you file your tax returns? If so you should have gotten your $786 back.  Also, you should have gotten your "stimulus payment" by now too. Go to irs.gov and check it out.

  4. I don't know about Canadien income taxes but I know universal healthcare in Canada is bleeding canadiens dry. You probably won't get a refund

  5. Assuming you are a single person, not married. You will get back every penny of the 786 tax deducted at source by your employer when you file your 2007 tax return :). Assuming no other special conditions apply.

  6. From what I know, you should get part or whole of your withhelds back. Anecdotally, when I was making around that, I was refunded my withheld taxes. I had tuition benefits, but no dependents. My rough understanding is that when you're sitting under about 20,000, you generally get most of it back. I can't see any way you would owe more, unless there was a major mistake when the amount to withhold was initially set up.

Also, it seems that the value of peege's response is summarized by his/her statement: "I don't know about Canadien income taxes". Troll elsewhere to criticize the health care system you apparently also don't know about.
