My town hall waters their lawns everyday, how do I stop them, make them aware?

4 buildings in the newly remodeled city hall area. they installed sprinkers in every single building. even small 5x5' areas. they are using them , precious water, everyday for 15 minutes. I wont presume to know how much waste their is. How do I proceed, what can I do to get the local city govenment to understand their ignorance to the wasted precious resource. What can i do?

What is done is done,although you could proceed to ask if in the near future,gravel,or shells,bark etc,be used for the majority of this lawn.

If it's a new lawn, it needs to be watered frequently.

First talk to the city manager or parks department.

You may write to the mayor or speak up a a town meeting.

I would type a letter to the mayor of your town.

I would also be an activist and attach a petition to the letter.  Get as many signatures as possible.

I would also see what your local newspaper is willing to do to help - they might print an article about you and your cause!

Voive your concerns to your local representative. If that doesn't work, write your congressman and appeal to the TV. The town hall could always use decorate rock and a few plants. I live in the desert and that's what we do.

Volunteer to city council to replant a small area - like the 5'x5' using plants that require lower water consumption.  Native species that thrive in your climate may be an attractive and distinctive alternative to just another boring lawn.  Working with government to beautify a small portion of city property is likely to gain city cooperation rather than proceeding with an adversarial approach.

Most cities use non-potable water (not drinkable or fit for human use) to water their lawns and keep the city buildings, parks and rest areas beautiful for the community. Check to see if this is the case if it is not introduce the idea at your next town meeting or send a letter to your city services representative.

It actually wont matter because in water gets evaporated into the air then falls like rain somewhere else and then is recollected again to sprinkle more lawns.

First you should start with alerting the public. Hang fliers around the city hall. Start a small protest and such. This should get the governments attention. For this you need to do some facts like exactly how much water is wasted and such. There are many places on the internet that can help u with that.

Once the government notices it is really out of your hands what happens. Be persistent though. Dont give up. Protest regularly and hang more fliers even when they are torn down.

What you are doing helps the environment a lot. Keep it up!

Petition. you get their attention by getting your locals to sign the paper. knock on doors and ask them about it. make sure they know why its bugging you. it is a civil and responsible way of handling things. I made a petition against a local hotel because they were emitting gasses that are harmful to the environment. got an appointment with the mayor, showed him the petition... and they had to change it :] good luck on your way to a cleaner environment!

Where do you live?  Here in New Orleans, water is not as precious a resource as in Las Vegas, for instance.  If you live in the southwest, you probably have genuine concerns.  If you live in Florida your concerns are valid.  If you live anywhere in the Mississippi Valley, water is an abundant resource, and should be used to keep the lawn green.

Why do you care, it's not like water is scarce.  It doesn't go away or disapear when it is used.  It is the ultimate renewable because it keeps coming back.

Summit to them a request that they put in xeriscaping for their landscaping.  Send a copy to your local TV and radio stations.  And other government officials, like your Congressman or the State environmental office.  Maybe include some information like this:

Contact your representative for your district.  Or find out when they hold their council meetings and attend one and point out your concern.  You should call them first because sometimes you need to have your "item of interest" put on the agenda for discussion.
