Preferably nearer to the city centre (the area of SMN train station). I know about the duomo, which I plan to go first and foremost

  1. The Uffizi Gallery is one of the most important Italian art galleries, and it's not far from the duomo.  It's usually really busy, but if you're there early in the morning (before it opens would be best) the line shouldn't be too bad.  You could even go to their website and try to make a reservation, but I'm not sure if they do those for individuals or just for groups.

Florence also has a huge outdoor market. They sell mostly leather goods (jackets, belts, wallets, etc.) but also scarves and other items.  I did most of my Christmas shopping there last year.  The market is pretty close to the city centre as well, just ask for directions.  When you get close you can smell the leather.

  2. Piazza Santa Maria Novella (and the cathedral itself) is very close to the train station and is very cool.  The leather market adjacent to San Lorenzo cathedral is not far either.  Obviously, Il Catedrale del Santa Maria Del Fiore is a must see, as is the baptsitry and tower by Giotto (all in Piazza del Duomo), Galleria dell"Accademia (where Michelangelo's David is located) is only 10-15 minutes walk from the Duomo.  Florence is a very compact city centre, you could walk from the stazione to the Ponte Vecchio and the Uffizi in 20 minutes tops.  Granted you dont have a ton of time, but everything is so close together you could see a lot of awesome artistic, architectural, and historically important stuff in that time.

  3. If you like art and it is early in the AM, go to the Uffizi Museum. There shouldn't be a line when it first opens. After that, forget it. Alternatively, the  Galleria dell'Accademia might be worth a visit, as it has Michelangelo's David. If your feeling fit, climb the stair case in the dome of the Duomo up to the top.  Spectacular views of the city below! Finally a visit to Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace) soars above Piazza della Signoria, where the Medici family used to rule.  If you have time, go in the place. Otherwise, stroll the plaza and the area around. Many shops, fountains and old buildings to explore.  Buona Fortuna! Ciao!

  4. Hey, among the many places you can visit in Florence there is a place that really can offer you relaxation, the Boboli Gardens (or Giardini di Boboli in Italian).

There is plenty of sun, shade, singing birds and whispering fountains in one of Florence's largest and most beautiful gardens, which are located behind the Pitti Palace.

It's about 15 minutes walking from station.

Sure you can visit also the market (very crowd place), Duomo, Ponte Vecchio,...

Have great fun in majestic Florence!
